The panel was moderated by Igor Jezdimirovi\u0107 from the Environment Engineering Group.<\/p>\n<p>The panelists examined the similarities and differences between Serbia and Slovenia in developing waste-to-energy facilities (with particular focus on public acceptance of such facilities), the reliability of thermal waste treatment, and environmental protection. The under-construction Elixir Prahovo facility was also presented, which is designed to treat hazardous industrial waste, unlike the facility at the Vin\u010da Waste Management Center that incinerates non-hazardous municipal waste.<\/p>\n<p>It was concluded that waste-to-energy facilities bring significant benefits \u2014 including reducing waste volumes going to landfills, and producing energy in line with Best Available Techniques (BREF) \u2014 that provide more value than they cost. The need for new facilities treating waste as a resource was also highlighted, especially in light of growing volume of waste.<\/p>\n<p>The congress brought together a large number of experts interested in renewable energy and minimizing the environmental impact of the processing industry. A total of 176 authors contributed to 66 scientific papers, which will be published in the Congress Proceedings.
