Within the panel <strong>\u201cLandfills \u2013 Challenges, Issues and Proposed Solutions\u201d<\/strong>, Vladimir Milovanovi\u0107, Director of Beo \u010cista Energija, spoke about modern perspectives and potential solutions aimed at improving waste management in Belgrade.<\/p>\n<p>The panel also featured Ivana Vilotijevi\u0107, Secretary of the Secretariat for Environmental Protection of the City of Belgrade, who presented the city\u2019s plans and the challenges in their implementation, as well as Nata\u0161a Vorotovi\u0107 Konstantinovi\u0107, landfill and large dam expert, who addressed the challenges encountered during the design of the new sanitary landfill in Vin\u010da. The panel was moderated by Jelica Putnikovi\u0107, energy expert.<\/p>\n<p>During 2025, the Waste Management Center in Vin\u010da received 693,000 tons of non-hazardous municipal waste. Half of this amount was thermally treated and used for the production of electricity and heat, while the other half was disposed of at the sanitary landfill.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that landfilling is the least desirable waste management option and that landfill expansion capacity is limited, the increasing waste volumes require the City of Belgrade to accelerate the development of primary waste separation infrastructure and achieve higher recycling and material recovery rates, thereby minimizing the amount of waste sent to landfill. Given that such a transition requires significant time and financial resources, Beo \u010cista Energija presented an initiative to build an additional Energy from Waste facility, which would eliminate the need for landfilling and provide the City of Belgrade with time to further develop systemic waste management solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A common conclusion of the forum was that waste in Belgrade is not being sufficiently utilized, and that there is a strong need for systemic solutions to treat waste as a resource and reduce the amount being landfilled.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beo \u010cista Energija supported the organization of the International Forum \u201cWaste \u2013 From Waste to Resource\u201d, held on May 21\u201322, 2026, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade, and organized by Energija Balkana editorial team.
