Boško Maravić, EHSG Manager at Beo Čista Energija, participated as a panelist in the discussion titled “Waste as a Source of Energy,” held as part of the International Congress on Process Industry “Processing ’25.” Other panel participants included Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Jovović (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade), Prof. Dr. Filip Kokalj (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maribor), and Nenad Ristić, Senior Manager for R&D Project Planning (Elixir Group). The panel was moderated by Igor Jezdimirović from the Environment Engineering Group.
The panelists examined the similarities and differences between Serbia and Slovenia in developing waste-to-energy facilities (with particular focus on public acceptance of such facilities), the reliability of thermal waste treatment, and environmental protection. The under-construction Elixir Prahovo facility was also presented, which is designed to treat hazardous industrial waste, unlike the facility at the Vinča Waste Management Center that incinerates non-hazardous municipal waste.
It was concluded that waste-to-energy facilities bring significant benefits — including reducing waste volumes going to landfills, and producing energy in line with Best Available Techniques (BREF) — that provide more value than they cost. The need for new facilities treating waste as a resource was also highlighted, especially in light of growing volume of waste.
The congress brought together a large number of experts interested in renewable energy and minimizing the environmental impact of the processing industry. A total of 176 authors contributed to 66 scientific papers, which will be published in the Congress Proceedings. The event was organized by the Society for Process Engineering, the Association of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and Technicians of Serbia (SMEITS), and the Chair of Process Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade, with the support of Elixir Group.
