Beo Čista Energija, the City of Belgrade’s private partner in the public-private partnership for waste management, announced today that one million tonnes of municipal solid waste have been used to generate electricity and heat at the Vinča Resource Recovery Center.
Between August 2021 and August 2026, more than three million tonnes of non-hazardous municipal waste were received at the Center. Of that total, one million tonnes were diverted from landfill and thermally treated in the Waste-to-Energy facility, generating 455,213 MWh of electricity and 293,172 MWh of heat.
The milestone was reached while maintaining high environmental protection standards. Emissions from the Waste-to-Energy facility are monitored around the clock by an automated Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), and Beo Čista Energija publishes emissions monitoring results for public access on its website: https://www.bcenergy.rs/rs/emisije/
“This first million tonnes represents a fundamental shift in how Belgrade manages its waste — from landfill to resource recovery,” said Vladimir Milovanović, Managing Director, Beo Čista Energija. “It is the result of years of cooperation between the City of Belgrade, our partners, and the institutions that supported this project from the start.”
The facility is the centerpiece of a public-private partnership between the City of Belgrade and Beo Čista Energija, a company established by ITOCHU Corporation (Japan), Veolia (France), and Marguerite, a pan-European infrastructure fund (Luxembourg).
The first million tonnes of waste thermally treated at Vinča is one of the tangible results of that partnership — and a shared achievement of all project participants, reflecting the commitment and cooperation of the many stakeholders working to build a modern, sustainable waste management system in Belgrade.
